Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh: After days of relentless sunshine and soaring temperatures, the weather finally turned in favour of residents across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula on Saturday morning. Dark clouds gathered over the region before sunrise, followed by cool winds and rain showers that ended a prolonged heatwave spell and provided long-awaited relief from oppressive conditions.
The dramatic change came after two earlier red alerts issued by weather authorities failed to produce the predicted storms. This time, however, the forecast translated into visible weather activity, with overcast skies reducing daylight intensity and rainfall beginning in several parts of the Tricity during the morning hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) renewed its red alert on Saturday, cautioning residents about the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds reaching speeds between 50 and 80 kilometres per hour. Citizens were advised to remain indoors during adverse weather conditions and avoid taking shelter beneath trees or near unstable structures.
Heatwave Loses Its Grip
The rainfall marked the first significant weather intervention since the heatwave tightened its hold on the region earlier this week. Temperatures had remained unusually high, causing discomfort across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Saturday’s showers, combined with gusty winds, brought an immediate drop in temperatures and improved outdoor conditions.
Meteorologists noted that moisture-rich winds had already begun influencing the region on Friday night, leading to noticeably cooler minimum temperatures. Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, while several locations across Haryana and Punjab also reported a decline in nighttime temperatures.
Cricket Match Unaffected Despite Earlier Warnings
Interestingly, the changing weather arrived only after a major sporting event escaped any disruption. The IPL Qualifier 2 encounter held on Friday evening at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh proceeded without interruption despite forecasts suggesting possible storm activity.
The anticipated weather disturbance never reached the venue during match hours, allowing thousands of spectators to witness the contest without concern. The match concluded successfully, with Gujarat Titans securing a berth in the championship clash.
Thunderstorm Alert Extended Across Punjab
Weather officials have warned that the current system could affect a large portion of Punjab beyond the Tricity region. Districts including Rupnagar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nawanshahr, and Anandpur Sahib remain under the possibility of severe thunderstorm activity.
Several other districts are expected to experience moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, while isolated areas may witness hailstorms.
Radar observations indicate active weather cells moving across northern parts of the state, prompting authorities to maintain close monitoring of the situation throughout the day.
Rainfall Uneven Across the Region
While parts of Haryana received substantial rainfall overnight and during the early morning hours, precipitation in Punjab remained relatively limited. Multiple Haryana districts reported measurable rainfall, helping ease temperatures and improve atmospheric conditions.
Punjab, by contrast, saw scattered showers, with only a few locations recording significant rainfall during the initial phase of the weather system.
Brief Respite Before Temperatures Rise Again
According to the latest forecast, thunderstorm activity and scattered rainfall are expected to continue through Saturday. Weather conditions are likely to improve on Sunday, with only isolated showers anticipated.
However, meteorologists believe the relief may be temporary. Dry weather is forecast to return early next week, and temperatures are expected to climb once again as skies clear across the region.
Authorities Urge Vigilance
The IMD has advised residents to exercise caution during periods of lightning and strong winds. Farmers have been urged to protect harvested crops and suspend field activities during severe weather. Motorists are also being advised to drive carefully and avoid travel during intense thunderstorm conditions.
For many residents, Saturday’s rainfall was more than just a weather event—it marked the first real break from a week of extreme heat, offering a refreshing reminder that the monsoon season is gradually drawing closer.
