Gurpreet Singh :- A 27-year-old Army jawan from Punjab has gone missing under mysterious circumstances while returning to his unit in Assam, triggering panic and anxiety within the family. Jaswinder Kumar, a resident of Dakhala village in Gurdaspur district, has been untraceable since May 17, with his family alleging the possibility of abduction.
According to information received, Jaswinder Kumar, who serves in the Dogra Regiment, had left for Assam after spending leave at his native village. He reportedly boarded a train from Amritsar railway station on May 17 for Dibrugarh, where his unit is stationed. Army officials later informed the family that he was last seen near Dibrugarh railway station, but failed to report to his regiment thereafter.
The case took a more alarming turn after the soldier’s mobile phone, which had remained switched off for several days, briefly became active on May 23. Family members said that when they called the number, the phone was answered by an unidentified person speaking in Assamese instead of Jaswinder Kumar. Shortly afterwards, the phone was switched off again.
The family believes the mobile phone may now be in someone else’s possession and fears that the soldier may have fallen victim to a conspiracy or kidnapping. The disappearance has left the household devastated, particularly as Jaswinder Kumar is said to be the sole earning member of the family following the death of his father.
His elderly mother, struggling emotionally since his disappearance, has appealed to the Central Government, the Indian Army and police authorities to trace her son and ensure his safe return. The family has also urged senior officials and the Defence Ministry to intervene immediately and coordinate with the Assam administration to intensify the search operation.
Authorities are yet to issue any official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s disappearance, while efforts to locate him are reportedly underway.
