Punjab Cop Killed in Targeted Morning Attack Near Amritsar, Police Intensify Search

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): A serving Punjab Police officer was shot dead by unidentified attackers near Amritsar early Sunday in what officials suspect was a planned assault carried out while he was travelling to report for duty.

The victim, Assistant Sub-Inspector Joga Singh, was posted with the Traffic Wing and was on his regular commute when two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted him near Majitha and opened fire.

Investigators said the incident occurred shortly after dawn when the officer was riding his scooter towards Amritsar city. Eyewitness accounts and initial evidence suggest the assailants approached swiftly, fired multiple rounds at close range, and escaped before anyone nearby could respond.

The officer sustained fatal bullet wounds, including one to the upper body, and collapsed on the roadside. He was declared dead at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.

Joga Singh, a native of village Ghaniye in Gurdaspur district, had served in the Punjab Police for several years. Colleagues described him as a disciplined officer with an unblemished service record.

The killing triggered an immediate response from district police authorities. Senior officials, including SSP Suhail Mir Qasim and other officers from the Majitha subdivision, reached the crime site soon after being informed and launched an intensive investigation.

Forensic experts combed the area for evidence and recovered spent cartridges believed to have been fired during the attack. Surveillance footage from surrounding roads and establishments is being reviewed to trace the route taken by the suspects before and after the shooting.

Police have not ruled out any motive and are probing multiple possibilities, including personal enmity, professional rivalry, or a premeditated revenge attack.

Security agencies have also alerted nearby districts and set up checkpoints to prevent the accused from fleeing the region.

The brazen murder of a police official in broad daylight has sparked concern across the force and prompted calls for swift action. Officials have assured that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice at the earliest.
