Punjab Braces for Intensifying Heat as Authorities Extend Alerts, Schools Close Early

Punjab Faces Prolonged Heat Spell as Temperatures Remain Above Average

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab and Chandigarh remain under the grip of extreme summer conditions, with the India Meteorological Department extending its severe heatwave warning for the next several days. Officials have cautioned that temperatures are expected to stay dangerously high until at least May 23, with little relief likely in the immediate future.

The latest weather data shows a further rise in daytime temperatures across the state, with readings staying significantly above the seasonal average. Faridkot recorded the highest temperature at 47.3 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest locations in North India, while several neighbouring districts also crossed the 40-degree mark.

Weather experts have identified districts including Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar, Fazilka, Barnala, Sangrur, Moga and Ferozepur among the worst affected, though the scorching conditions are being felt across almost the entire state. Chandigarh too is witnessing unusually high temperatures, adding to public discomfort.

The meteorological department has ruled out any immediate rainfall activity over Punjab, saying dry weather and strong hot winds are likely to dominate through the week. In many places, temperatures are expected to remain between 45 and 47 degrees Celsius, while Chandigarh could continue hovering around 42 to 45 degrees.

With the heat showing no signs of easing, Chandigarh schools have revised their academic calendar and announced summer vacations from May 23 to June 30. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to protect students from prolonged exposure to harsh weather. Teachers will return briefly at the end of June for official duties.

Health authorities have also issued another public advisory urging people to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours. Residents have been advised to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, wear light-coloured clothing and remain alert for symptoms of dehydration or heatstroke.

Hospitals and health centres across Punjab have been directed to stay prepared for a possible rise in heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, senior citizens and those with existing medical conditions.

Officials said the coming days will require heightened caution as the heatwave is expected to remain severe across the region before any significant change in weather patterns arrives.
