Tyre Blaze on Turkish Airlines Jet at Kathmandu Airport Sparks Emergency Response, Passengers Escape Unhurt

Kathmandu (Rajeev Sharma): A tense situation unfolded at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport after a Turkish Airlines aircraft experienced a tyre fire moments after landing from Istanbul. The incident prompted an immediate emergency response, though all passengers and crew were evacuated safely.

The aircraft, operating as flight TK 726, had just touched down when airport personnel noticed flames emerging from part of the landing gear. Fire and rescue teams stationed at the airport rushed to the site and quickly brought the fire under control.

Security officials confirmed that all 278 passengers and 11 crew members onboard were safely escorted out of the plane. Among those travelling on the international flight were several officials linked to the United Nations.

Authorities said emergency evacuation procedures were activated without delay to avoid any possible danger. Passengers were moved to secure areas while airport staff handled the situation.

Preliminary assessments indicate the fire likely broke out due to overheating in the tyre section during landing, although aviation experts are conducting a detailed inspection to determine the precise cause.

The unexpected incident caused temporary disruption to airport activity as the runway area was secured for investigation and safety clearance. Flight operations later resumed after officials declared the site safe.

Airport police praised the rapid action of firefighters and technical staff, saying their swift coordination ensured that the situation did not escalate into a major aviation emergency.

Nepal’s civil aviation authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident, while Turkish Airlines is expected to assist investigators in reviewing technical and operational details related to the aircraft’s landing.
