Alberta Appoints Justice Michael Ewenson, KC, to Calgary Court to Strengthen Justice System

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma):— Alberta’s government has appointed Michael Ewenson to the Calgary Criminal Division and Calgary Region of the Alberta Court of Justice, effective May 11, 2026.

The appointment is part of the province’s ongoing effort to improve access to justice and reduce delays in civil, criminal, and family court matters across Alberta. Mickey Amery said the government remains focused on building a faster and more efficient justice system for Albertans.

Ewenson brings extensive legal and prosecutorial experience to the role. He served with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service from 2005 to 2021, including 10 years as assistant chief Crown prosecutor, where he handled complex criminal and homicide cases. He later joined the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), becoming permanent executive director in 2022.

In 2025, Ewenson was named interim CEO of Alberta’s Police Review Commission and was appointed King’s Counsel in 2024. James Hunter welcomed the appointment, saying Ewenson’s experience and dedication to public service will strengthen the court’s commitment to fair, accessible, and timely justice.

Since June 2023, Alberta’s government has made 49 judicial appointments, including 47 appointments to the Alberta Court of Justice.
