Early Assam Trends Point to BJP Surge as Counting Advances Across State

Arrest Warrants Issued Against AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Associates in Patiala Case

Assam (Rajeev Sharma): Vote counting for the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam is revealing a strong early advantage for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the party and its allies edging closer to a dominant tally in the 126-seat House. The initial rounds suggest the ruling coalition may be heading toward a comfortable return to power.

The counting process is being carried out at 40 centres across 35 districts. Most districts are managing with a single counting venue, though some have multiple centres to handle the workload. Nagaon district has three counting locations, while Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat are operating two centres each.

Polling for all constituencies took place on April 9 in a single phase, drawing a voter turnout of 85.96 percent from an electorate exceeding 2.5 crore. The high participation level has been widely noted as a sign of strong public interest in the electoral process.

As counting progresses, several members of the outgoing government are maintaining leads. Atul Bora, who heads the Asom Gana Parishad and serves as Agriculture Minister, is ahead in Bokakhat by a margin of more than 3,000 votes after the opening round, outperforming his nearest challenger from the Raijor Dal.

In another key development, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is currently trailing in the Jorhat seat, a constituency being closely watched for its political significance.

While these are still early trends, the numbers so far suggest that the BJP-led alliance has managed to consolidate support across large parts of the state. The final picture will become clearer as additional rounds of counting are completed, but the early momentum appears firmly in favour of the ruling side.
