President Trump Likens US Naval Blockade to Piracy Amid Escalating Conflict with Iran

Washington DC (Rajeev Sharma): President Donald Trump generated significant controversy on Friday evening by stating that the United States Navy was acting “like pirates” during the ongoing naval blockade of Iranian ports. His comments came as he described a recent operation where US forces successfully seized a ship along with its cargo and oil, characterizing the seizures as a “very profitable business.” Trump’s admission that American forces are essentially engaging in piratical behaviour—while maintaining that they are “not playing games”—marks a blunt shift in the rhetoric surrounding the maritime strategy employed by Washington and its allies during the current war against Iran.

The maritime tension is a direct consequence of the war that broke out on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran. In response, Tehran has targeted Israeli territory and Gulf states hosting American bases, while simultaneously imposing its own blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic chokepoint accounts for roughly 20 per cent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and its closure has led to a sharp increase in global energy prices. The conflict has already resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people across the region, as Israeli and American strikes continue to hit targets within Iran and Lebanon.

President Trump has faced immense international and domestic condemnation for his handling of the war, which remains largely unpopular within the United States. Legal experts warned last month that American strikes could constitute war crimes after the President threatened to target civilian infrastructure and destroy Iran’s entire civilization. As US forces continue to seize sanctioned container ships and Iranian tankers in Asian waters, the administration’s focus on the profitability of these operations has raised further ethical questions. Despite shifting goals and timelines for the conflict, the US-led blockade of Iranian ports remains a central, albeit highly contentious, element of the current military offensive.
