Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): The AAP government in Punjab demonstrated its legislative strength on Friday by comfortably winning a confidence motion in the State Assembly. During the session held on May 1, 2026, 88 out of 94 party MLAs voted in favour of the current administration, reaffirming the party’s command over the provincial house. The proceedings occurred without the presence of the main opposition parties, as the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Shiromani Akali Dal chose to stay away from the vote. Following the successful count, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced his intention to submit a formal record of the result to the President of India to solidify the legal standing of his government’s stability.
While the vast majority of the ruling party’s members were present to back the motion, the final tally accounted for a few notable absences. Four legislators did not attend the session, and two others—Laljit Singh Bhullar and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra—were unable to participate due to their current incarceration. Despite these missing votes, the administration successfully projected an image of internal unity, effectively rebutting recent rumours of potential splits or outside interference aimed at destabilizing the cabinet. Mann emphasized that the outcome provides a clear rejoinder to critics who have questioned the integrity of his government or the security of the public mandate.
Throughout the day, the political climate in Chandigarh remained tense as opposition leaders dismissed the floor test as a superfluous use of legislative time. By boycotting the session, the opposition attempted to frame the vote as an unnecessary distraction from more urgent governance issues. In contrast, the treasury benches used the opportunity to reinforce their policy agenda and demonstrate a firm grip on the province’s political landscape. By securing this formal vote of confidence, the Mann-led government aims to put an end to speculative talk regarding its longevity and shift the focus back toward administrative reforms and upcoming legislative goals.
