DSP Yogesh Kumar Dies of Gunshot Injury at Kapurthala Police Quarters; Probe Underway

Gurpreet Singh :- A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) serving with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Yogesh Kumar, died after sustaining a gunshot injury at his official residence in police quarters on Tuesday morning, officials said. Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain whether the incident was a case of suicide or an accidental discharge of a firearm.

The incident occurred around 7:30 am while the officer was at home with his family, including his wife, parents, son and daughter. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Confirming the development, Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said the officer had been transferred just three days ago from ANTF to the Bureau of Investigation (BOI) in Chandigarh. Preliminary inputs from family members suggest that the firearm went off while the officer was cleaning his weapon.

SP Madhavi Sharma, who reached the spot soon after the incident, said statements of family members are being recorded as part of the inquiry. Sources indicated that the officer appeared to be under stress in recent days, though there has been no official confirmation in this regard.

The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which will be conducted by a board of doctors. Police officials said all possible angles are being examined and further investigation is in progress.
