Washington (Rajeev Sharma): A fresh escalation in rhetoric has emerged between Iran and the United States, with Tehran sharply criticising remarks made by Donald Trump and cautioning that ongoing tensions could impact navigation through a critical global shipping lane.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused Trump of making multiple misleading statements during a recent address, describing them as baseless and ineffective in shaping the outcome of the conflict or negotiations.
Amid the verbal exchange, Iran signalled that continued pressure from Washington could lead to tighter oversight of the Strait of Hormuz. Officials suggested that vessels passing through the strait might be required to adhere to specific routes and obtain prior clearance, highlighting Tehran’s willingness to assert greater control if tensions persist.
The strategic waterway is vital for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s oil passing through it. Even the possibility of restrictions has raised concerns in international markets, as any disruption could trigger volatility in oil prices and trade flows.
