Christopher Morales Williams Shatters Championship Record to Claim World Indoor 400m Gold

Toruń, Poland (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian sensation Christopher Morales Williams secured his first global title on Saturday, March 21, 2026, winning the men’s 400-metre gold at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. The 21-year-old from Vaughan, Ontario, clocked a staggering 44.76 seconds, establishing a new championship record and becoming the first athlete in history to run a sub-45-second 400m indoors outside of the United States.

Morales Williams entered the final as the man to beat after posting the fastest times in both the heats (45.51) and the semi-finals (45.35) earlier in the competition. In the final, which was conducted under a new two-section format, the Canadian lined up in lane six in the second heat. Despite being slightly gapped by American Khaleb McRae at the break, Morales Williams utilized his trademark closing speed to surge past McRae on the final curve, maintaining his momentum through the finish line to beat the previous championship mark held by Jereem Richards.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Morales Williams, whose unofficial world indoor record of 44.49, set in 2024, was never ratified due to an issue with the starting blocks used at the SEC Championships. “I have worked hard for this,” Morales Williams said following his win. “A gold and a championship record—I could not ask for more. The win gives me a big boost for the outdoor season.” His gold is Canada’s second medal of the championships, following Sarah Mitton’s silver in the women’s shot put on Friday.

2026 World Indoor 400m Final Standings:

  • Gold: Christopher Morales Williams (CAN) – 44.76 (CR)
  • Silver: Khaleb McRae (USA) – 45.03
  • Bronze: Jereem Richards (TTO) – 45.39

The performance further solidifies Morales Williams’ status as a top contender for the upcoming outdoor season and the international stage. With this title, he has now swept every round of a world championship, proving his dominance and tactical maturity on the world stage.
