EAM Jaishankar to Address Lok Sabha on West Asia Crisis as Parliament Resumes Stormy Session

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh)— External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to deliver a high-stakes statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday, March 9, 2026, regarding the rapidly deteriorating security situation in West Asia. The announcement, included in a revised list of parliamentary business circulated on Sunday evening, comes as the second half of the Budget session begins under a cloud of geopolitical and domestic tension. While the opposition-backed resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla was initially the sole item on the agenda, the government has now prioritized this foreign policy update in response to intense pressure from opposition benches demanding a formal discussion on the conflict.

The Ministry of External Affairs has been closely monitoring the precarious environment where ongoing bombardments by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets have triggered retaliatory strikes on American military bases and Israeli positions. Central to the Minister’s address will be the safety and repatriation of Indian nationals caught in the crossfire. According to recent data from the ministry, more than 52,000 Indians have already successfully returned to the country following a partial reopening of regional airspace, though many more remain in vulnerable zones across the Persian Gulf.

The inclusion of the West Asia crisis in the official schedule is expected to broaden the scope of Monday’s proceedings beyond the immediate leadership challenge in the House. Opposition leaders have already signaled their intent to question the government’s diplomatic strategy, particularly concerning the impact of the conflict on global energy prices and the stability of the Indian diaspora. By bringing the matter to the floor, the government aims to address national anxieties regarding the Strait of Hormuz blockade and the broader implications of a regional war on India’s economic and strategic interests.
