Taber Police Urge Retailers to Secure Cough Syrup Amid Surge in ‘DXM’ Misuse

Taber, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma) — The Taber Police Service has issued a formal appeal to local retailers and pharmacies to implement stricter controls on over-the-counter cough syrups following a sharp rise in thefts and dangerous behaviours linked to the drug dextromethorphan (DXM). In a statement released on Sunday, March 1, 2026, authorities highlighted a growing trend of substance misuse among youth in the southern Alberta community, prompting calls for immediate preventive measures.

Police are specifically asking businesses to consider moving products containing DXM behind service counters and limiting sales strictly to adults. While the medication is safe when used as directed, “recreational” ingestion of excessive amounts can lead to severe physical and psychological consequences. The Alberta College of Pharmacy has acknowledged the growing concern, encouraging pharmacists across the region to take extra precautions regarding the storage and sale of these common household medicines.

The medical risks associated with DXM overdose are significant. According to police, misuse can cause rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, seizures, and permanent liver failure—particularly when the syrup also contains acetaminophen. Psychologically, users may experience intense paranoia, hallucinations, and a complete loss of contact with reality. In extreme cases, the effects can be fatal or result in long-term neurological damage.

Beyond retail intervention, the Taber Police Service is calling on parents and guardians to play an active role in curbing this trend. Officials have advised families to monitor home medication cabinets and watch for behavioral “red flags,” such as sudden shifts in social circles, declining school performance, slurred speech, or impaired coordination. “We encourage open conversations with youth about substance misuse,” the police statement added, emphasizing that while possession of DXM is not illegal, its impact on community safety is a mounting priority.
