SGPC Terminates Giani Raghbir Singh as Head Granthi of Golden Temple Over “Serious Allegations”

AMRITSAR (Gurpreet Singh) — In a major development within the highest echelons of Sikh religious administration, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has officially terminated the services of Giani Raghbir Singh from the position of Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). The decisive action was taken during an emergency interim committee meeting held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, following a period of intense internal scrutiny regarding the official’s conduct.

SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami confirmed the termination, citing “serious allegations” that had surfaced against Giani Raghbir Singh. While the specific nature of the charges remains undisclosed, the SGPC leadership stated that the former Head Granthi’s activities were deemed detrimental to the reputation of the apex Sikh body and the sanctity of the Golden Temple. This move is being viewed as a significant step by the SGPC to uphold the integrity of the high offices associated with the Khalsa Panth.

According to President Dhami, Giani Raghbir Singh had been issued a 72-hour ultimatum to provide a formal explanation and evidence regarding a specific matter currently under investigation. However, the former Head Granthi failed to produce any substantial proof or justification within the given timeframe. The committee concluded that this lack of response represented a manifest disregard for established administrative protocols and the religious maryada (code of conduct) that governs service at the holy shrine.

Reaffirming the committee’s commitment to discipline, President Dhami emphasized that no individual, regardless of their rank, is above the religious code of conduct. As the SGPC begins the process of searching for a successor, senior management has been directed to ensure that all daily religious ceremonies and duties at Sri Harmandir Sahib continue without interruption, adhering strictly to traditional protocols. The sudden vacancy in such a prestigious role has sent ripples through the community, with many awaiting further clarity on the investigation.
