Delhi High Court Suspends Rajpal Yadav’s Sentence in Cheque Bounce Cases Till March 18

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): In a relief to actor Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court on Monday suspended his sentence in multiple cheque bounce cases till March 18 and allowed his release from jail.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma granted interim suspension of the sentence after noting that Yadav had deposited ₹1.5 crore in the bank account of the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. “We are granting you an interim suspension of sentence… It is till the next date of hearing,” the court said.

Yadav had sought suspension citing a family wedding scheduled for February 19. The court directed him to surrender his passport and restrained him from leaving the country without prior permission. He has also been asked to remain present, either physically or virtually, on the next date of hearing on March 18.

The matter arises from revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court order that upheld their conviction by a magisterial court in April 2018 in the cheque bounce cases. The trial court had sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment.

In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended his conviction, subject to sincere efforts to reach an amicable settlement with the complainant.

Earlier this month, while directing Yadav to surrender, the court had observed that his repeated failure to honour undertakings to repay the complainant warranted strong disapproval. The court noted he was required to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases against him and ordered that previously deposited amounts be released to the complainant.

As per the court record, two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh each were deposited in October 2025, while a substantial amount remained outstanding. On February 4, the court had declined to extend the deadline for his surrender.
