Saskatchewan (Rajeev Sharma): Police in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, are examining a controversial incident at a local retail outlet after a private security guard was filmed striking a woman during a confrontation that allegedly involved racist abuse. The video, which has spread widely on social media, has reignited debate around racism, religious sensitivity, and the use of force by security personnel in Canada.
The incident unfolded during a dispute inside the store, where the guard reportedly questioned the woman over her conduct with store merchandise. What began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated. In the footage, the woman is heard shouting insults and appears to reach toward the guard’s turban and beard—articles of deep religious significance in Sikhism.
Moments later, the guard is seen backing away briefly before delivering a slap. The situation drew immediate reactions from shoppers, some of whom objected to the act, while another security employee stepped in to calm the scene.
Following complaints from witnesses, the Prince Albert Police Service launched an investigation and secured CCTV recordings from the premises. Authorities said they are carefully reviewing whether the guard’s action amounted to an assault or could be considered self-defence in response to provocation. No charges have been announced so far.
The security firm involved has removed the guard from duty until the inquiry is completed. Police stressed that the suspension is a precautionary step and not an indication of guilt.
The episode has taken on wider significance amid reports of increasing confrontations involving security staff in the region. Civil rights organisations in Saskatchewan have responded by urging stricter training requirements, particularly in handling racially motivated incidents and high-stress encounters without resorting to physical force.

While many users have condemned the slap, others—especially from the Punjabi community—have voiced support for the guard, arguing that the act followed an attack on his religious identity. In parallel, the Saskatchewan government has ordered a review of labour conditions for private security guards, including limits on weekly working hours, citing concerns that fatigue and pressure may contribute to rising violence.
