Sydney (Rajeev Sharma): Australia have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with star fast bowler Pat Cummins ruled out of the tournament due to a persistent back injury. Cricket Australia confirmed Cummins’ unavailability while announcing its 15-member squad for the global event, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
Cummins has not fully recovered from his injury and requires additional rehabilitation time, according to officials. His absence is a major setback for Australia, given his role as a frontline pacer and proven performer in high-pressure international tournaments. Top-order batter Matthew Short has also failed to make the cut in the initial squad.
Mitchell Marsh has been appointed captain of the side, which last lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2021. The selectors have opted for Ben Dwarshuis and Matthew Renshaw, citing their adaptability and recent strong performances across formats.
Australia’s squad includes Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa.
Chairman of selectors Tony Dodemaide said Cummins’ absence opened the door for Dwarshuis, whose left-arm pace, ability to swing the ball and effectiveness with slower variations are expected to be valuable in subcontinent conditions. He also highlighted Dwarshuis’ athletic fielding and lower-order batting as added advantages.
Dodemaide backed Renshaw’s selection, pointing to his consistent performances for Australia, Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat in recent months. He said Renshaw’s skill set would be particularly useful in spin-friendly conditions, especially during the Sri Lanka leg of the tournament.
Australia have been drawn in Group B alongside Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Oman. The team will open its World Cup campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
