Punjab Through 2025: A Year of Upheaval, Uncertainty and Unanswered Questions

Punjab Floods Leave 23 Dead, Over 1,000 Villages Submerged

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): For Punjab, 2025 unfolded as a year laden with crises that cut across nature, politics, security and society. What began with hope soon turned into a succession of challenges, leaving deep emotional, economic and political scars across the state.

One of the most devastating blows came from nature itself. Unprecedented rainfall in late summer led to severe flooding in multiple districts, claiming over 50 lives and wiping out standing crops across vast agricultural belts. Thousands of families were displaced as homes, roads and public infrastructure crumbled under the force of swollen rivers. The financial impact ran into thousands of crores, igniting a sharp exchange between the state and the Centre over compensation and disaster relief.

Public safety remained another pressing concern throughout the year. Incidents of targeted shootings, extortion threats and attacks linked to organised crime created a climate of fear, particularly in urban and border areas. Grenade explosions near police installations further intensified anxiety, placing the AAP-led government under sustained pressure over policing and intelligence failures.

Agrarian unrest once again surfaced when security forces cleared farmers protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. While the move reopened crucial highways after months of disruption, it triggered anger among farm unions and renewed debate over the handling of farmers’ demands and protests.

International developments also left a profound imprint on Punjab. The forced return of Indian migrants from the United States, many of them young Punjabis, shocked the public. Their deportation highlighted the risks of illegal migration routes and exposed the financial ruin faced by families who had invested everything in the promise of a better future abroad.

The political landscape was no less turbulent. Electoral wins boosted the ruling party’s confidence, but controversies continued to dog the opposition. Remarks by senior Congress leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu triggered internal turmoil, while corruption allegations and arrests of prominent leaders kept political temperatures high. The detention of senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia and the CBI action against a top police officer underscored a year marked by investigations, counter-allegations and mistrust.

Punjab’s strategic location again came into focus following cross-border military action by Indian forces in response to terror attacks. Border districts remained on edge as security was tightened, reminding residents of the region’s sensitive geopolitical reality.

The state was also shaken by human tragedies closer to home. A spurious liquor incident claimed dozens of lives, exposing gaps in enforcement and accountability. The alleged assault of an army officer by police personnel further eroded public faith, drawing national attention and demands for strict action.

Amid these grim developments, Punjab mourned the loss of several well-known personalities from sports, politics, cinema and music. Their deaths prompted widespread tributes and moments of collective reflection in an otherwise troubled year.

As 2025 concludes, Punjab finds itself grappling with the aftermath of disasters, unrest and institutional challenges. The year may be remembered for its pain and turmoil, but it has also laid bare the urgent need for reform, resilience and renewed trust between the state, its institutions and its people.
