Toronto (Rajeev Sharma): A tragic shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus has claimed the life of an Indian doctoral student, prompting expressions of grief from Indian authorities and concern within the international student community. The victim, identified as Shivank Avasthi, was pursuing advanced research studies in Canada.
According to Toronto Police, the incident occurred in the vicinity of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road. Emergency responders reached the location after reports of gunfire and found the student suffering from a fatal gunshot injury. He was declared dead at the scene. Police said those responsible had escaped before officers arrived, and the surrounding area, including parts of the campus, was briefly secured as investigations began.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto issued a statement conveying sorrow over the incident and assured full support to the student’s family. Officials said they are coordinating with local authorities and assisting the family with all necessary formalities during the ongoing investigation.
Local media reports indicate that the case adds to a rising number of homicides in Toronto this year, heightening public concern over safety in the city. The incident has also revived anxieties among international students, many of whom rely on assurances of security while studying abroad.
The shooting follows another recent case involving the death of an Indian national in Toronto. Earlier this week, police confirmed the murder of 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana, also of Indian origin. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a suspect known to the victim, with investigators suggesting the crime may be linked to domestic circumstances.
India’s diplomatic mission has expressed condolences in both cases and stated that it remains actively engaged with Canadian authorities to ensure support for the affected families as investigations continue.
