Goa (Rajeev Sharma): A late-night fire at a well-known entertainment venue in North Goa turned catastrophic on Sunday, killing 25 people and injuring six others, according to officials investigating the tragedy.
The incident occurred at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, a nightlife hub about 25 kilometres from Panaji. The blaze erupted shortly after midnight, rapidly engulfing the interiors before many inside could escape. Rescue teams battled the flames for hours as frantic calls from relatives and tourists poured in.
Authorities initially reported 23 fatalities, later confirming two more after search efforts concluded. Among the dead were four visitors to the state and fourteen employees on duty when the fire broke out. The identities of the remaining victims are still being verified.
Survivors with burn injuries and breathing difficulties were rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim, where doctors described their condition as stable but requiring close monitoring.
Investigators have not yet identified the exact cause of the fire, though early indications point to safety lapses. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said preliminary checks suggest the club was operating without meeting mandatory fire-prevention standards.
Sawant criticised the negligence, stressing that Goa cannot afford such tragedies during its busiest tourism period. He pledged strict action against both the establishment’s management and any regulatory officials who may have permitted operations despite violations.
The nightclub, which opened only last year and had quickly become a hotspot for partygoers, now stands cordoned off as forensic teams examine the charred remains for clues. Police and fire authorities have launched parallel inquiries, and formal proceedings are expected once initial findings are compiled.
The incident has renewed public concern over safety enforcement in Goa’s nightlife sector, with calls for tighter inspections and accountability to prevent similar disasters in the future.
