Chandigarh Sector 26 shooting: What Happened So Far?

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): A late-night shooting in Chandigarh’s Sector 26 on Monday has left a 35-year-old man dead, prompting a wide-ranging investigation into what authorities believe may be a gang-related attack.

The victim, identified as Inderpreet Singh Perri, was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Senior officials, including IG Chandigarh Pushpendra Kumar, inspected the scene soon after the incident. According to police, at least eight empty shells and one live round were recovered, suggesting the attackers fired several shots before fleeing.

What police have established so far

Preliminary findings indicate Perri suffered four to five bullet injuries, though the definitive cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem examination at PGI Chandigarh. Officers confirm that Perri had a history of criminal cases, a factor that has led investigators to consider the possibility of a gang rivalry behind the murder.

A forensic team has been deployed to examine physical evidence, while CCTV cameras in and around Sector 26 are being scanned for clues about the assailants’ movements. Police say all potential motives are being explored, including the involvement of rival groups.

Broader backdrop: Recent gang activity in Punjab

The late-night shooting comes amid a series of law-enforcement actions targeting organised crime in the region.

Just last Friday, Batala Police detained Kawaljit Singh, believed to be a key aide of gangster Nishan Joriyan. Officers recovered a weapon and alleged that Singh and another associate had earlier fired at a local shop after issuing a ₹2 crore extortion threat in Joriyan’s name.

AGTF action on November 26

In a separate operation on November 26, the Anti-Gangster Task Force, along with SAS Nagar Police, intercepted four alleged operatives connected to foreign-based gangster Goldy Dhillon of the Lawrence Bishnoi network.

The confrontation occurred near Steel Strips Towers along the Dera Bassi–Ambala stretch. When police closed in on a house where the suspects were hiding, the group allegedly opened fire. Officers retaliated, and two suspects sustained injuries before being subdued.

Investigation underway

Back in Chandigarh, Sector 26 remains under tight watch as police teams interview witnesses and reconstruct events leading to Perri’s killing. Authorities say the investigation is still in its early stages, and more details are expected once forensic reports and surveillance footage are thoroughly analysed.
