Winter Session of Parliament from Dec 1 to 19: Shortest Sitting Planned in Years

Parliament Gears Up for High-Stakes 16-Hour Debate on ‘Operation Sindoor’ Amid Monsoon Session

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Winter Session of Parliament will be held from December 1 to December 19, lasting just 15 working days, making it one of the briefest sessions in recent memory.

The announcement was made by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who said on X that President Droupadi Murmu has approved the schedule. Rijiju expressed hope for a “constructive and meaningful” session that advances the people’s interests and upholds democratic values.

This session will convene two weeks after the Bihar Assembly election results are declared on November 14, and is expected to be politically charged. The Opposition, led by the Congress, is preparing to raise a series of issues, including alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions and accusations of vote tampering in states such as Haryana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

Reacting sharply to the announcement, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the short duration, calling it “unusually delayed and truncated.” He alleged that the government intends to avoid detailed discussions and accountability.

The Monsoon Session, held from July 21 to August 21, had 21 sittings over 32 days, during which 15 Bills were passed despite major disruptions that consumed nearly two-thirds of the schedule.

With several pending legislations and unresolved debates from the previous session, the upcoming Winter Session is expected to witness intense political exchanges, even within its limited time frame. The Opposition has already hinted at cornering the government over governance, economic performance, and election-related controversies.
