Doha [Qatar], October 26, 2025: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed concerns that Washington’s expanding strategic engagement with Pakistan is aimed at sidelining India, affirming that the US’ “deep, historic, and important” partnership with New Delhi remains intact.
Speaking to reporters en route to Doha, Qatar, Rubio acknowledged India’s concerns due to longstanding tensions with Pakistan but emphasized that the US engages multiple nations based on shared interests. “I don’t think anything we’re doing with Pakistan comes at the expense of our relationship or friendship with India,” he said.
Rubio highlighted India’s diplomatic maturity, noting that New Delhi maintains relations with countries the US does not, and praised this approach as part of a pragmatic foreign policy. He added that the US sees opportunities to expand strategic cooperation with Pakistan while maintaining strong ties with India.
His remarks come amid renewed US-Pakistan engagement under the Trump administration, which has raised apprehensions in New Delhi. Earlier this year, following India’s Operation Sindoor against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, both countries agreed to halt military escalations, with Trump claiming credit for de-escalating tensions—a claim India rejected.
Rubio’s clarification underscores Washington’s approach of balancing strategic relations in South Asia while managing trade and security interests.
