Jaisalmer (Rajeev Sharma): A devastating fire that tore through a private AC sleeper bus near Jaisalmer on Tuesday has left 20 people dead and several others battling for their lives, with authorities now pointing to a jammed door as a major factor in the tragedy.
The incident occurred just 10 minutes after the bus began its journey from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. According to preliminary findings, a malfunctioning door prevented passengers from evacuating as flames rapidly engulfed the vehicle, leaving many trapped inside with no route to safety.
Police officials confirmed on Wednesday that the blocked exit significantly worsened the situation. “The inability to open the door cost precious time and lives,” an officer at the scene stated.
Fifteen survivors sustained serious burn injuries and were rushed to hospitals across Jodhpur and Barmer. Doctors say several are in critical condition and undergoing intensive care.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the incident “heart-wrenching” and visited the site personally to oversee rescue operations. He also met with medical teams and instructed officials to extend full support to the injured and affected families.
Efforts are underway to identify the victims, many of whom were burned beyond recognition. Forensic experts have been deployed, and DNA analysis may be used to assist with confirmation of identities. Officials say the process could take time due to the severity of burns.
While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, early reports suggest a technical fault may have ignited the blaze. Authorities are reviewing the vehicle’s maintenance records and questioning the private bus operator for possible safety violations.
The state government has pledged compensation for the victims and warned of strict action against any negligence found during the investigation.
This tragedy has sparked fresh debate over the safety standards of long-distance private buses, particularly those operating on rural routes with limited emergency infrastructure.
