Bathinda, Punjab, October 11, 2025: BJP MP from Mandi and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut will appear before the Bathinda District Court on October 27 in a long-pending defamation case. The court accepted a request from her legal team on Friday, scheduling her personal appearance for 2 PM.
The case, filed by 85-year-old farmer Mahinder Kaur from Bahadargarh Jandian village, dates back to January 4, 2021. Kaur, who was 81 at the time, accused Kangana of making defamatory remarks during the farmers’ protest in Delhi. The actress had allegedly shared Kaur’s photograph on social media and suggested that she was a paid protester — a claim that drew widespread outrage.
Over the years, the case has gone through several legal stages. Kangana initially sought relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which granted a temporary stay. However, the High Court dismissed her plea in August 2025, allowing the trial to continue. A subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court also failed to secure any exemption, compelling her to appear in person.
The controversy surrounding Kangana deepened earlier this year after a CISF constable allegedly slapped her at Chandigarh Airport, reportedly over her remarks about farmers’ protests. Her repeated comments about elderly women in the movement have continued to spark public backlash.
Kangana’s scheduled appearance on October 27 is expected to draw significant attention, with the case symbolizing the broader tension between celebrity influence and farmers’ rights amid the legacy of the 2020–21 protests.
