Punjab Launches “PEHEL Mart” to Empower Rural Women and Promote Handmade Products

Chandigarh: In a major initiative to strengthen rural entrepreneurship and empower women, the Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission (PSRLM) has launched “PEHEL Mart,” a dedicated outlet for handmade and organic products crafted by Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from across the state.

The mart was inaugurated at the Punjab Civil Secretariat, Sector 1, Chandigarh, by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, in the presence of Chief Secretary KAP Sinha and Ajit Balaji Joshi, Administrative Secretary, Rural Development & Panchayats.

Showcasing Punjab’s cultural heritage, the marketplace offers a diverse collection of sustainable products, including traditional Phulkari embroidery, suits, juttis, honey, pickles, squash, vinegar, oils, spices, wheat flour, papad, soaps, and candles. All items are made by rural artisans, providing them direct market access and better income opportunities.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sond described the mart as a vital step toward self-reliance and economic empowerment. “This platform highlights the creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial skills of Punjab’s rural women. By connecting SHGs with wider markets, it will inspire more women to adopt self-employment and contribute to sustainable growth,” he said.

The launch event was attended by senior officials from the Rural Development and Panchayats Department, including Joint Development Commissioner Shena Aggarwal, PSRLM CEO Varjeet Walia, ACEO Rupali Tandon, and Secretary General Administration Gauri Parasher Joshi. SHG members also participated, celebrating the recognition of their efforts and showcasing their products with pride.

With this initiative, PSRLM reaffirmed its mission to nurture rural talent, create sustainable livelihood opportunities, and drive women’s empowerment across Punjab.
