New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): With the white-ball campaign nearing its climax in the UAE, India’s focus is quickly turning to the traditional format of the game. As preparations begin for the upcoming Test series at home against the West Indies, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has unveiled a squad that blends fresh energy with experienced hands.
The 15-member team, announced today, features Shubman Gill continuing in his leadership role, but it’s Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion to vice-captain that has caught many eyes. The veteran all-rounder steps up as deputy with regular vice-captain Rishabh Pant still unavailable for selection.
While the core of the team remains consistent, the selectors have made bold calls — Karun Nair has been shown the door after a string of unimpressive performances in England. Devdutt Padikkal, once seen as a T20 prospect, makes a return, this time with a shot at proving himself in whites.
Short Break, Longer Format
The Indian team, currently in the UAE for the Asia Cup, will have barely enough time to reset before they switch gears. The Test series kicks off just three days after the Asia Cup final, with the first game scheduled for October 2 in Ahmedabad. The second and final match will be played in Delhi a week later.
The timing makes this series a crucial litmus test — not just for players, but for the team’s resilience across formats.
Emerging Names & Familiar Faces
Among the newcomers, Nitish Kumar Reddy finds a place in the squad for home Tests — a nod to his recent domestic performances and all-round potential. Sai Sudharsan, who impressed in the white-ball leg earlier this year, is another youngster who retains the selectors’ trust.
Meanwhile, seasoned campaigners like KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah continue to hold key spots, expected to anchor the team through the two-match series.
Leadership Rejig
Ravindra Jadeja’s elevation as vice-captain isn’t just symbolic — it signals the team’s growing reliance on his experience across all formats. Known for his grit and consistency, Jadeja now takes on added responsibility during a crucial transitional phase for the Indian Test setup.
