Guwahati, September 16 – An Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer has been arrested for allegedly amassing assets nearly 400 times more than her known sources of income, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
The officer, Nupur Bora, was taken into custody by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell after searches at her residences led to the recovery of ₹92.50 lakh in cash and ornaments worth nearly ₹1.5 crore. She was posted as Circle Officer in Goraimari, Kamrup district, at the time of her arrest.
“She had amassed wealth 400 times more than her known sources of income. Not just suspension or dismissal from service will do; penal measures through the legal process are necessary,” Sarma said in Baksa district. He added that several others linked to the case are also being questioned.
The chief minister urged the public to remain vigilant and report any demand for bribes by government officials.
Investigators revealed that Bora had been under surveillance for six months, beginning with her alleged involvement in an illegal land transfer deal while serving as Circle Officer in Barpeta. She was later shifted out of the district.
Senior Superintendent of Police, CM’s Special Vigilance Cell, Rosie Kalita, confirmed Bora’s arrest following a preliminary inquiry. “We searched her flat in Guwahati and a rented house in Barpeta, recovering over ₹92.50 lakh in cash. It is the largest cash recovery by our cell so far,” Kalita said.
Preliminary findings show Bora also owns two plots and three flats in Guwahati, apart from the seized jewellery and cash. Investigations remain ongoing.
