Ludhiana (Gurpreet Singh): The monsoon season is nearing its end in Punjab, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirming that the system will retreat from the state by September 20. As it withdraws, several districts are likely to experience light to moderate rain over the next three days.
Weather experts said cloudy skies and drizzle could be seen across many parts of the state on Monday. Rain activity is expected to increase on Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly in northern and central districts such as Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali and Nawanshahr. Scattered showers are also predicted for Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala, Barnala, Mansa and Kapurthala.
Officials said the rainfall would bring a noticeable dip in day temperatures. On Sunday, Ludhiana reported a high of 37.6°C, while Pathankot recorded a minimum of 23.6°C. A fall in both maximum and minimum temperatures is expected, providing relief from the persistent humidity of recent days.
The IMD, however, clarified that there is no threat of heavy rainfall or storms during this period. Farmers have been urged to take preventive measures to protect crops from possible waterlogging and to make arrangements in fields accordingly.
Meanwhile, the state’s river systems are witnessing declining water levels, as rainfall in upstream hilly regions has reduced. Authorities said this has eased concerns of further flooding, with normal conditions gradually returning in affected areas.
District weather updates:
- Amritsar: Expected drizzle, max 34.8°C; seasonal rainfall stands at 651.9 mm.
- Jalandhar: Possibility of light rain, temperature at 33°C; 902.7 mm rainfall so far.
- Ludhiana: Alert for light showers, max 37.6°C; cumulative rainfall 798.2 mm.
With the monsoon on its way out, Punjab is preparing to transition into cooler and more pleasant weather conditions in the coming week.
