Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): As Punjab continues to battle widespread flooding, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in Amritsar on Thursday to assess the damage first-hand. His visit follows directions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who asked him to personally evaluate the situation and coordinate support measures.
On arrival, Chouhan met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who presented him with a comprehensive report detailing the devastation in Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur districts. Soon after, the Union Minister addressed the media, assuring that the Centre would extend full assistance to the state in this difficult time.
“Punjab has always stood at the forefront in serving the nation. Now, when the state is in distress, the central government will not hold back any help,” Chouhan stated.
Highlights from the Minister’s Statement:
- Tribute to Punjab’s resilience: He praised the state’s historic contribution to the country and said he salutes its spirit in facing challenges.
- Extent of damage: According to government estimates, around 1,400 villages have been hit by floods. Chouhan confirmed he would personally visit several affected areas to meet locals and inspect crop and property damage.
- Centre’s commitment: The minister underlined that the Government of India is standing firmly with Punjab and that Union leaders including Ravneet Singh Bittu and Sunil Jakhar will also participate in relief efforts.
- Assessment teams deployed: Two central teams, with officials from multiple departments such as agriculture, rural development, energy, finance, water resources, and roads, have been dispatched. Their report will guide future relief and rehabilitation measures.
Chouhan later began his field visits to flood-hit villages, stressing that his immediate priority is relief and rescue work rather than political questions.
