Amritsar, August 31 – Relief and rescue operations continue on a war footing in flood-affected areas of Amritsar. So far, more than 2,500 stranded people have been evacuated to safer places by various rescue teams. Today, an NDRF team saved a young man from drowning, giving him a new lease of life.
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni, who is personally leading the operations, said that six NDRF teams, 17 Army teams, along with civil and police administration, are engaged in relief work. She informed that over 35,000 cooked food packets and 8,500 dry ration packets have already been distributed. Additionally, 10 tonnes of silage and 50 tonnes of animal fodder have been supplied. To meet dairy needs, 5,000 packets of milk powder and more than 3,500 packets of long-lasting milk have been delivered to the affected areas.
According to the Meteorological Department, the region has recorded 611 mm of rainfall so far, with over 35 mm in just the past 16 hours. The DC revealed that 93 villages have come under the impact of the Ravi river, affecting nearly 35,000 people. Crops spread over an estimated 23,000 hectares have been destroyed, and around 50 houses have collapsed.
She further said that relief teams are working round the clock, ensuring timely supply of medicines and medical aid. Sixteen relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and food to flood-hit families, while special arrangements have also been made for livestock care.
Senior officials including SSP Maninder Singh, Additional DC Rohit Gupta, ADC Amandeep Kaur, Commissioner Surinder Singh, SDMs Ravinder Singh and Gursimran Singh Dhillon, AC Khushdeep Singh, District Treasury Officer Navkeerat Singh, DFSC Amanjeet Singh, Red Cross Secretary Samson Masih, DDPO Sandeep Malhotra and others are continuously engaged in monitoring and supporting the relief efforts.
