Himachal Pradesh (National Times): With the water level at Pong Dam rising beyond the critical threshold of 1,396 feet, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has announced the release of 1.10 lakh cusecs of water into the Beas River at 2 PM today. In response, a high alert has been issued across downstream areas in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
The dam, located in Kangra district, has witnessed a sharp increase in water inflow due to persistent rainfall in the upstream catchment areas. To prevent overflow and potential damage to the dam structure, the BBMB has initiated controlled water discharge measures.
Officials have warned that the sudden increase in river volume may lead to flooding in low-lying areas. As a result, all villages along the Beas River basin in Himachal and Punjab have been placed on high alert. Local administrations have been instructed to activate emergency response systems and ensure the readiness of evacuation teams.
“Given the current reservoir level, timely release of water is necessary to manage inflows. Coordination with state authorities is ongoing to mitigate any downstream impact,” a BBMB spokesperson said.
Villagers in at-risk zones are being advised to remain alert, avoid riverbanks, and move to safer ground if necessary. Public announcements, mobile alerts, and local broadcasts are being used to disseminate real-time information.
In addition, district administrations in both states have been asked to keep relief camps ready and ensure that rescue equipment and personnel are deployed in vulnerable areas.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next 48 hours, which may add further pressure on reservoirs and river systems. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected as conditions evolve.
