Ottawa/Riga (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney held talks with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, highlighting the close and expanding partnership between Canada and Latvia.

The two leaders reaffirmed their countries’ shared commitment to security, stability, and economic cooperation. Discussions touched on deepening collaboration in key sectors such as artificial intelligence, aerospace, and defence production, as part of Canada’s broader engagement with Europe.

Both prime ministers emphasized the crucial role of NATO and reiterated their united stance against Russia’s ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine. They stressed the need for a just and durable peace, backed by credible security guarantees for Kyiv.

Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Latvia’s security, underscoring this with the announcement of an extension to Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s military mission in the region. He also expressed gratitude to the Latvian government and people for their continued hospitality toward Canadian Armed Forces personnel stationed there.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintain regular contact as both governments work to strengthen transatlantic cooperation and address shared challenges.
