New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The opposition’s INDIA alliance has put forward Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, former judge of the Supreme Court, as its consensus candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
Making the announcement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the decision was unanimous and underlined that the contest represents more than just electoral arithmetic. “This is an ideological battle. All opposition parties agreed that Justice Reddy embodies the principles we stand for, which is why we have chosen him as our joint nominee,” he stated.
Justice Reddy’s career spans decades in the judiciary, having served at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and later at the Supreme Court of India. Kharge praised him as a jurist committed to protecting fundamental rights and uplifting the underprivileged. “His judgments reveal a deep concern for social and economic justice. He consistently stood with the poor and upheld constitutional values,” he said.
With the Vice Presidential election drawing near, the INDIA alliance is positioning Justice Reddy as a symbol of its push for progressive politics and constitutional safeguards. The Vice President also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making the role politically significant.
