Ottawa/Alaska (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed strong support for U.S. leadership in efforts to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, following high-level discussions at the Alaska Summit.
Carney said that the firm stance taken by President Donald Trump and Washington has opened a window of opportunity to move toward halting the conflict. He emphasized that credible security assurances for Ukraine must be central to any sustainable peace plan.
“President Trump’s leadership and that of the United States is helping create a path to end Russia’s unlawful war in Ukraine,” Carney stated.
The Prime Minister further highlighted the importance of coordinated international backing, noting that Ottawa is working hand in hand with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other members of the Coalition of the Willing to bolster Kyiv’s defense and long-term stability.
Carney welcomed Washington’s willingness to provide security guarantees, describing them as a crucial step in ensuring a “just and lasting peace.” He reaffirmed that Canada remains committed to standing firmly with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
The Alaska Summit saw leaders discuss ways to strengthen cooperation among allies, tighten security commitments, and accelerate aid efforts as the war moves through its third year.
