Kathua, J&K (Rajeev Sharma): A devastating cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district late Saturday night left four people dead and several others injured, officials confirmed on Sunday. The incident occurred in Janglote village, causing sudden flooding and heavy damage to nearby infrastructure.
The impact of the cloudburst was severe, washing away parts of NH-44, damaging a railway line, and submerging a local police station. Rescue teams, supported by the Army and paramilitary forces, have been deployed to assist residents and clear affected areas.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said he had spoken to senior police officials in Kathua and assured continuous monitoring of the situation. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims, calling the incident “tragic and deeply unfortunate.”
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also mourned the loss of lives and directed the administration to expedite rescue and relief operations. His office said that multiple villages, including Jodh Khad and Juthana, suffered damage due to the heavy rains and landslides.
Authorities have issued an advisory, cautioning people against venturing near streams, rivers, or hilly terrain as water levels in the Ujh river and other water bodies are dangerously high. Helpline numbers (01922-238796, 9858034100) have been made available for emergency assistance.
As rainfall continues, officials warn that more flash floods and landslides could hit vulnerable regions, and residents are urged to remain vigilant.
