Alberta Invests $50M to Expand Wastewater Services in Airdrie

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta government has announced a $50-million investment to upgrade Airdrie’s wastewater system, a move aimed at meeting the infrastructure demands of one of the province’s fastest-growing cities.

Since 2022, Airdrie’s population has surged by more than 25%, surpassing 90,000 residents. To accommodate this rapid growth, the project will include the construction of a new 7-kilometre wastewater pipeline connecting Airdrie to Calgary’s existing wastewater treatment system. This regional solution will reduce long-term costs and eliminate the need for a separate treatment facility.

“Airdrie is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Alberta, and needs upgraded infrastructure to meet the demand for new, serviced subdivisions,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. “This expansion will support the projected growth of 45,000 housing units and a significant number of commercial developments.”

MLA for Airdrie-East Angela Pitt called the investment “great news for a growing community,” noting that the upgraded system will ensure families and businesses have the reliable services they need to thrive.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown expressed gratitude for what he described as “the largest provincial funding commitment in our city’s history,” adding that the project will help the city manage infrastructure pressures during a critical time of growth.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $114 million. Design work is expected to begin in late 2025, with construction scheduled to start in 2026 and completion anticipated in 2027.
