Jalandhar (National Times): A chilling discovery at Shahkot police station in Punjab’s Jalandhar district has shocked the region after the decomposed body of 26-year-old kabaddi player Gurbhej Singh, popularly known as Bheja, was found in an upstairs room of the station. The body, believed to be nearly three days old, was discovered after a foul odour spread across the premises late Sunday night.
Gurbhej, a resident of Bajwa Kalan village, was known both as a promising kabaddi player and a local bodybuilder. In recent months, he had been assisting at the police station, serving tea and performing other small duties. According to his family, he left home on Friday to report to the station, as per his routine, but never returned. Multiple attempts to trace him proved futile — until the disturbing stench from the police station roof led to the discovery.
Upon reaching the rooftop room, the police found Gurbhej’s lifeless body, already in a state of decomposition. His remains were sent to Nakodar Government Hospital for postmortem, and his cremation was held shortly afterward in the presence of grief-stricken villagers and community members.
SHO Balwinder Singh Bhullar confirmed the body was found in a room not frequently visited by staff. “Preliminary signs suggest he may have died due to a poisonous insect bite or some other unknown reason. However, we are awaiting the postmortem report for confirmation,” Bhullar stated, adding, “Gurbhej was a good boy and a talented athlete. We are deeply saddened by this incident.”
The incident has left locals demanding answers — how could a man remain undiscovered for 72 hours inside a functioning police station? Many have raised questions about negligence and the absence of basic accountability within the premises.
As investigations continue, police officials maintain they are probing the matter from all angles, including the possibility of foul play. The postmortem report is expected to shed further light on the exact cause of death.
The tragic demise of Gurbhej Singh has sent a wave of sorrow throughout the kabaddi and bodybuilding communities in Punjab, where he was regarded as a rising talent.
