No Relief for Bikram Singh Majithia: Punjab-Haryana High Court Defers Hearing Till July 8

Chandigarh (National Times): In a setback to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has deferred the hearing on his petition challenging his arrest and remand. The matter will now be heard on July 8, 2025, with no interim relief being offered to the senior Akali leader.

Majithia had approached the High Court challenging the June 26 remand order issued by the Mohali District Court, terming his arrest and subsequent police remand as illegal. However, during the hearing, the Advocate General (AG) of Punjab argued that the petition had become irrelevant as fresh summons and a new remand order had been issued since the initial challenge.

Responding to this, the court directed Majithia’s counsel to file a revised petition based on the updated developments. The bench, led by Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya, made it clear that without the amended documents reflecting the latest remand status, the matter could not proceed substantively.

The hearing comes in the wake of heightened political drama in Punjab, with the Shiromani Akali Dal accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of political vendetta against Majithia. Akali leaders, including SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, have slammed the Mann-led government, alleging a targeted crackdown against opposition figures.

The High Court had earlier provided a short window to Majithia’s legal team to produce the fresh remand order but, with procedural delays continuing, the case remains in limbo. Until then, Majithia remains in custody as per the Mohali court’s orders.

The next hearing on July 8 is expected to be crucial in determining the legality of the remand and whether Majithia’s plea for relief will gain traction in court.
