80 Irrigation Officials Charged for Substandard Work Materials
Chandigarh, June 11 – Haryana’s Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry has made it clear that there will be no compromise on the quality of construction materials. Speaking at a press conference from her residence, she emphasized that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is operating under a strict zero-tolerance policy, especially regarding corruption and negligence in public works.
Choudhry informed that under the Chief Minister’s directive, the Vigilance Wing of the Irrigation Department collected 48 samples from various ongoing construction projects. Out of these, 18 samples failed quality standards. In response, the department has charge-sheeted 80 officials, ranging from Junior Engineers to Chief Engineers, under Sections 7 and 8 of the Haryana Civil Services Rules.
She warned that any lapse in accountability, especially as projects near completion, would not be tolerated. Responding to questions, she mentioned that substantial payments had already been made to contractors, and options for recovering funds from them are now being explored.
On the national Keshau Dam project, Choudhry stated that the initiative is of critical importance to Haryana. CM Nayab Singh Saini recently reviewed the project’s progress. She explained that the dam will not only supply water for irrigation and drinking but will also provide Haryana with a share in hydroelectric power. Once operational, it will ensure 709 cusecs of water from the Yamuna River for the state.
Commenting on the central government’s 11-year tenure, she said the country is fortunate to have a strong leader like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She highlighted major decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the criminalization of triple talaq, and recent counter-terror operations like ‘Operation Sindoor’ as proof of his decisive governance.
