Los Angeles, June 9, 2025: U.S. President Donald J. Trump unleashed a scathing attack on California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Monday, accusing them of failing the city amid escalating protests over federal immigration raids. Calling their handling of the situation an “absolutely horrible job,” Trump demanded a public apology for what he described as “lawless riots.”
Taking to his social media platform X, Trump wrote: “Governor Gavin Newscum and ‘Mayor’ Bass should apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they have done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots. These are not protesters, they are troublemakers and insurrectionists. Remember, NO MASKS!” The post, amplified by tech mogul Elon Musk, crossed 6.5 million views by Monday morning.
In response, Governor Newsom fired back, accusing Trump of deliberately sowing chaos. “Let’s be clear: Local law enforcement did not require assistance. Yet, Trump sent troops anyway with the intent to create chaos and violence. He succeeded,” Newsom posted, further warning that Trump’s unilateral federal deployment undermines state sovereignty and mirrors authoritarian conduct.
The ongoing unrest erupted following large-scale ICE raids in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Dozens of undocumented individuals were reportedly detained, prompting widespread demonstrations. Over the weekend, protesters clashed with federal agents, leading to the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops.
According to reports by Reuters, state officials objected to the federal intervention, labeling it unlawful and politically motivated. But President Trump doubled down. He declared Los Angeles “invaded and occupied by illegal aliens and criminals,” and accused demonstrators of attacking federal officers attempting to carry out deportation orders.
Trump’s statement included a directive to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi to take “all necessary action” to “liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion.” He vowed that order would be restored and undocumented migrants expelled.
The political rift between California leadership and the federal administration continues to widen as the situation intensifies. Trump’s forceful rhetoric and swift military involvement have drawn both praise and condemnation, reigniting the national debate over immigration enforcement, federalism, and civil unrest.
