Ottawa/New Delhi (National Times): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has revealed the rationale behind inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, despite India not being a formal member of the group.
Carney, who recently assumed office after a sweeping electoral victory, said India’s global stature made its participation essential. “India is the fifth-largest economy in the world and the most populous country. Its presence is necessary, especially in view of the emerging world order,” Carney said, underscoring New Delhi’s growing influence on the global stage.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Carney wrote, “I spoke with Narendra Modi today on the longstanding relationship between Canada and India, including deep people-to-people ties and significant commercial links. Importantly, we agreed to continued law enforcement dialogue and discussions addressing security concerns.”
The Canadian leader’s invitation comes amid ongoing efforts to reset bilateral ties between the two democracies, which have seen friction in recent months. Carney disclosed that both nations have agreed to initiate dialogue on law enforcement cooperation and accountability frameworks — a move seen as a positive step toward restoring trust and addressing mutual security concerns.
Prime Minister Modi also took to X to confirm the conversation, stating, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”
He added, “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”
The G7 Summit is scheduled for later this month and is expected to focus on global economic resilience, democratic cooperation, climate action, and regional security issues. India’s participation, experts say, could add a vital perspective from the Global South.
