CJI Gavai Urges Executive-Judiciary Synergy to Tackle Judge Vacancies, Pushes for Diversity

New Delhi, May 17, 2025: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has stressed the urgent need for greater cooperation between the judiciary and the executive to fill vacant judicial positions across the country. In a recent public address, CJI Gavai pointed out that a significant portion of India’s massive case backlog is due to unfilled judges’ posts. He urged both branches to collaborate meaningfully to ensure swift and transparent appointments.

Acknowledging the persistent challenge of judicial vacancies, he reiterated the Collegium’s ongoing efforts to accelerate the appointment process. However, he stated that these efforts require active participation from the executive to succeed fully.

CJI Gavai also used the occasion to advocate for more inclusive representation in the judiciary. He called on High Courts to recommend more candidates from underrepresented sections, including women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. According to him, a diverse judiciary not only upholds the principles of equality but also enhances public confidence in the justice system.

His remarks underline a broader vision of reform—one that balances efficiency, inclusion, and public trust. The Chief Justice’s statement comes at a time when India’s judicial system continues to grapple with delays, mounting pendency, and debates over institutional transparency.
