Canada Elections 2025: Canadians Head to Polls After Shifting Election Dynamics

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Today, April 28, Canadians cast their votes in one of the most unpredictable elections in years, Al Jazeera reports. Early in 2024, polls showed the Conservatives cruising towards victory, but the landscape shifted dramatically after Justin Trudeau stepped down in January. His departure, combined with economic turmoil sparked by new U.S. tariffs under President Trump, has fueled a surprising Liberal resurgence.

Polling expert Frank Graves noted, “It’s pretty clear the Liberals are going to win this now,” highlighting a stunning reversal from earlier predictions.

With over 7.3 million early votes already submitted, turnout is breaking records. The economic impact of Trump’s tariffs has rattled Canadian industries, particularly steel, lumber, and agriculture, leading to widespread layoffs, including at Algoma Steel in Ontario.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre had once capitalized on economic dissatisfaction, but the rapidly evolving situation has caused many voters to reconsider. Today’s election could mark a defining moment for Canada’s political future.
