PAHALGAM (National Times): Tuesday’s terror attack in the serene meadows of Pahalgam has shattered a peaceful tourist enclave, claiming at least 27 lives, including honeymooners, families, and a local guide beloved for his warm smile. The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, has stepped forward to claim responsibility.
It was a picture-perfect afternoon at Baisaran Meadows when two to three men, dressed in army uniforms, burst onto the scene. They opened fire with automatic weapons, cutting short horseback rides and picnic outings. “He was showing us the best view of the valley, and within seconds, we heard gunshots,” recounted Mira Singh, a wounded survivor. “People fell off their horses everywhere, men, women, even children.”
Security forces arrived swiftly, but the gunmen vanished into the surrounding pine forests. Rescuers found victims scattered across the rolling grasslands, their blood staining the once-green pastures. Heartbroken relatives searched frantically among the wounded, clutching photographs of missing loved ones.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the carnage as “an unforgivable atrocity.” He warned that the full death toll may rise as officials continue to tally the missing. “These were innocent civilians enjoying their holiday; this attack has no justification,” he said.
Back in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wrapping up a visit to Saudi Arabia, spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah, who is now racing to Srinagar. In a message of solidarity, PM Modi said, “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.”
