Chandigarh (National Times): Pro-Khalistan activist and Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal Singh, will remain behind bars for another year, as the Punjab government has extended his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) at Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
The decision, which comes amid a broader review of cases related to the 2023 crackdown, is notable because it applies solely to Amritpal Singh. Nine of his co-accused, who were arrested in connection with 12 FIRs, did not see their detentions extended.
Senior officials indicated that Amritpal’s continued detention is based on fresh intelligence inputs suggesting he remains a significant risk to the state’s public order and internal security. According to sources, this recommendation originated from the Amritsar District Magistrate, who based the request on reports submitted by the Punjab Police and intelligence agencies.
The state’s Home Affairs and Justice Department made the final decision after reviewing the advisory board’s recommendation, reflecting a consensus that Amritpal’s release could destabilize the region.
Amritpal, who heads the “Waris Punjab De” organization, has been held in custody since April 2023 following a statewide manhunt triggered by escalating concerns over his radical activities. He and his associates were apprehended during a high-intensity police operation launched in March of that year.
While others arrested alongside him have not had their detentions renewed, the government maintains that Amritpal’s influence and activities continue to pose a threat, justifying the extension of his custody until April 2025.
The extension order was officially issued on June 3, 2024, ensuring that Amritpal Singh remains under preventive detention for another full year.
