New Delhi, April 10, 2025: In a temporary relief to Indian exporters, the United States has suspended its newly imposed 26% additional tariffs on Indian goods for 90 days, effective April 10. The suspension will last until July 9, 2025, according to an executive order from the White House.
President Donald Trump had announced steep reciprocal duties on April 2 targeting 60 countries, including India, with the aim of curbing the trade deficit and bolstering American manufacturing. India was among the hardest hit, with tariffs impacting sectors such as shrimp, steel, aluminium, and auto components.
However, the suspension applies only to the new levies — not the existing 10% baseline tariffs, which will remain in effect. Duties on steel and aluminium, implemented on March 12, and on auto components, effective April 3, also continue.
The relief does not extend to China, Hong Kong, or Macau, where higher tariffs will remain in force.
Trade experts noted that sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and select energy products were already exempted. Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), said the temporary suspension would provide breathing space for exporters but urged caution, given the policy’s short duration.
The suspension order specifically delays the enforcement of a key tariff provision in Executive Order 14257, which listed country-specific rates under a new trade regime.
