New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is taking a significant step forward in enhancing passenger security by introducing full-body scanners as part of a high-tech upgrade. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced that trial runs for these advanced scanners will commence in May 2025, aligning with the latest safety protocols set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
During the initial phase, four full-body scanners equipped with cutting-edge millimetre-wave technology will be installed which will include two units at Terminal 1 (T1) and another two at Terminal 3 (T3). These machines will undergo a comprehensive trial lasting approximately three to four months. Following this, a committee led by BCAS will assess the outcomes and define the Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for broader rollout across the airport.
These new scanners mark a shift from conventional X-ray systems as they do not emit ionizing radiation. This makes them safe for all travelers, including expectant mothers and individuals with medical devices. Designed to identify both metallic and non-metallic threats, including concealed explosives, the scanners complete each scan in just three seconds and are capable of processing up to 1,200 passengers per hour.
To address privacy concerns, the scanners will display generic 2D avatars without capturing or storing any personal or physical images. According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, this technology will significantly strengthen security protocols while also streamlining the passenger experience at IGIA.
With this initiative, Delhi Airport joins the ranks of global airports leveraging smart security tools to improve both safety and convenience for air travelers.
