Mumbai, March 24, 2025 – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has demanded a public apology from stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his alleged “insult” to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, while police arrested 12 workers of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena for vandalizing Kamra’s show venue in Mumbai.
A Mumbai court later granted bail to Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others. Fadnavis condemned Kamra’s remarks, vowing that “urban Naxals” and “Left liberals” would be taught a lesson. Meanwhile, Mumbai police filed an FIR against Kamra for defamatory statements, while also charging 40 Shiv Sena workers for the rampage at the Habitat studio and Hotel Unicontinental in Khar, where the show was filmed.
The controversy escalated as Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished the Habitat studio on Monday, citing building violations in the basement of the hotel. The studio announced its permanent closure, expressing shock over the attacks.
The CPI (M) condemned the violence, accusing the BJP-led Maharashtra government of suppressing free speech. Congress leader Harshvardhan Sapkal likened the state’s governance to the “Taliban”, questioning why ruling party workers took the law into their own hands. Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel warned that Kamra must apologize within two days or face consequences.
The uproar disrupted Maharashtra’s legislative assembly, with Shiv Sena MLAs demanding strict action against Kamra. Amid the chaos, Aaditya Thackeray criticized the ruling alliance, pointing out that PM Narendra Modi recently defended criticism as vital to democracy, contradicting the actions of his party’s ally.
